The PT Cruiser’s long 103-inch wheelbase (compare with Mustang at 101.3 inches and the Beetle at 99.1 inches) and stiff chassis make for a better-quality ride.

I didn't start finding many PT Cruisers in junkyards until about 10 years ago, at which point the Chrysler section in just about every big self-service yard became choked with row upon row of them. While most of these cars trucks were ordinary— if cute-looking— transportation appliances, Chrysler built some with turbocharged engines and five-speed manual transmissions. Here is one of those rare machines, found in a Northern California self-service yard last month. The PT Cruiser was based on the Neon, meaning that it was no sweat to take any high-performance Neon bits and swap them onto its sibling. The PT Cruiser GT didn't quite get the same running gear as the SRT-4 Neon, but it was a genuine factory hot rod. The heart of the PT Cruiser GT was this turbocharged engine, rated at 215 horsepower in the 2003-2005 version. The naturally-aspirated that went into ordinary PT Cruisers made 150 horses in 2004. While a Getrag five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment (at least at the lower-end trim levels) for all but the final year of the Cruiser's 2001–2010 American sales run, nearly every buyer paid what it took to get the optional four-speed automatic. That didn't happen with this car truck, which has the five-speed. The GT also got better brakes, bigger wheels, a stiffer suspension, a lower ride height, and a louder exhaust. What's not to like? Will we miss the special-edition PT Cruisers when they're all gone? Referred to as a "small-car alternative" in this TV commercial. It was based on the Chrysler Airstream from the prewar era. It was an important contributor to the five door revival of the 2000s. The car had been based on the Plymouth Pronto line of retro concept cars of the nineties. The PT Cruiser came in various forms including a woody and panel van. The car was disputed as to whether it was a car or truck, likely as an attempt to acquire cheaper emissions standards associated with trucks. It was eventually determined to be a car. The PT in its name stood for Pronto. The designer of the PT Cruiser also designed the Chevrolet HHR. Video Gaming[] In racing video game Gran Turismo 3, the PT Cruiser is the best possible starter car. This is due to a massive reduction in the amount of cars in the game from the past two in the series, likely caused by technical difficulties releasing to the more powerful PlayStation 2 after the first two GT games were released to the original PlayStation. The car is also purchased new as used cars were removed for GT3 (although they returned in GT4, which had a much larger amount of content). Custom Chrysler PT Cruiser The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a retro styled compact automobile launched by Chrysler as a 5-door hatchback in early 2000 (for the 2001 model year) and as a 2-door convertible in early 2005 (added to the 2005 model lineup). Originally conceived as a Plymouth model, the PT Cruiser received the Chrysler nameplate on introduction in anticipation of the 2001 discontinuation of the Plymouth brand. The PT Cruiser was designed by Bryan Nesbitt, who later also styled the Chevrolet HHR. The name PT Cruiser includes the initialism PT, standing for "Personal Transport" and designating the car's platform as well as production code. A four-seat convertible model was added for 2005. It is a two-door with an integrated "sport bar" for added rigidity and rollover protection. The sport bar also caused air to flow over the rear seat passengers, resulting in a less drafty ride. The convertible officially ceased production December 21, 2007, but the last 2007 convertibles were marketed as 2008 models. On January 12, 2009, Chrysler LLC, under the private equity firm of Cerberus Capital Management, announced the gradual discontinuation of the main model. On July 6, 2009, after reorganization into the "New Chrysler", the company changed plans to discontinue the model by specifying that it will do so for Canadian and Mexican markets only. On July 9, 2010 the PT Cruiser ended production. Worldwide production totaled million units. Overview[] The PT Cruiser is a front-wheel drive 5-passenger vehicle, classified as a truck in the by the NHTSA for CAFE fuel economy calculations but as a car by most other metrics. Chrysler specifically designed the PT Cruiser to fit the NHTSA criteria for a light truck in order to bring the average fuel efficiency of the company's light truck fleet into compliance with CAFE standards. A turbocharged GT model was introduced for the 2003 model year. A convertible was introduced for the 2005 model year. The PT Cruiser was manufactured at Toluca Car Assembly in Toluca, Mexico. On March 8, 2006, DaimlerChrysler announced that it had built 1,000,000 PT Cruisers at the Toluca plant. The PT Cruiser was also assembled at the EUROSTAR Automobilwerk in Graz, Austria, for global markets (outside North America) in 2002, using the production code PG. European PT Cruisers built in 2001 or from 2003 onwards were built in Mexico under the PT production code. The version came standard with a L four-cylinder gasoline engine. In addition to this standard model, a L four-cylinder diesel engine built by Mercedes Benz was also available in Europe, Asia, and South Africa. A L engine (D4RE) was also available outside the It produced 140 hp (100 kW) SAE at 6500 rpm with 130 lb·ft (180 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. In 2001 Car and Driver acknowledged the PT Cruiser on its Ten Best list and the PT Cruiser also won the North American Car of the Year. Design[] Intended to evoke an old gangster getaway car or a street rod based on a 1930's car, the 2000 PT Cruiser grew out of a collaboration among Robert A. Lutz, who was an executive at Chrysler at the time, Bryan Nesbitt, a designer, as well as Dr. Clotaire Rapaille. A comparison showing by what vehicles the Cruiser was inspired (Quora) The vehicle's design was mostly inspired by the late 1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, while taking cues from other Chrysler vehicles, like the Prowler, CCV, Pronto Cruiser and the Airflow. Updates[] While the body style remained consistent from year to year, there were multiple versions of the PT Cruiser, designated by badges in the lower left hand corner of the rear lift-gate. Models included the Classic Edition, Limited Edition, Touring Edition, "Dream Cruiser", "Street Cruiser", "Pacific Coast Highway Edition" and PT Cruiser GT. Non-GT Turbo (180 hp) edition models (introduced in 2004) were identified by a " Turbo" badge on the lower right hand corner of the rear lift-gate. The GT model (introduced in 2003) has a " Turbo High Output" badge on the right hand corner of the lift-gate indicating the 215-230 hp engine version. The PT Cruiser was updated for 2006 to include scalloped headlights, a new 'chrome' grille (that no longer extended below the "bumper"), new lower front fascia which eliminated the patented brake cooling ducts (US patent #6,315,091), available round fog lamps and redesigned taillights. Interior updates included an updated dash, new materials, and an analog clock to the center stack. The audio system featured a line-in jack for MP3 players integrated into the dash. The turbocharged L four-cylinder engine was available in 180 hp (130 kW) or "High-Output" 230 hp (170 kW) versions. A "Mopar" cruise control unit became available as an after market unit on 2007 models. Also in 2007, Chrysler dealers were permitted to order vehicles with separate options (un-bundled options from option packages) such as anti-lock brakes and Side Impact Airbags. Sirius Satellite Radio radio also became an option that could be installed as a dealer option with a factory appearance ( roof mount satellite antenna). Safety[] In 2002 Euro NCAP gave the PT Cruiser a three (out of five) stars rating. Results in the frontal impact test (6 out of 16 possible points) were in part due to the fact that the PT Cruiser is designed—under U. S. regulations—to also protect unbelted occupants. Height of the seats and side airbags helped to attain a maximum score of 16 points in the side impact test. For 2009, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the PT Cruiser the highest rating of Good overall for occupant protection in frontal crashes and the lowest overall rating of Poor for side crashes. It was the only small car to earn Poor marks in both side and rear evaluations as well as the only small car to not offer electronic stability control. A factory-built version with a convertible top appeared for 2005 (and later "won" the Top Gear Worst Car of the Last 20 Years award), but what about the PT Cruiser shoppers who wanted a drop-top before then? It turns out the aftermarket had the solution: the Newport Convertible Engineering conversion, which took new PT Cruisers and added a fully functioning convertible top. According to a discussion on Allpar, 54 of these conversions were performed, and I found one of them in a Denver-area self-service yard last month. Newport Convertible Engineering is still around, though they're in Huntington Beach instead of Placentia these days. If you want a Tesla Model S or Range Rover convertible, they'll build it for you. The NCE conversion for the PT Cruiser cost $9,900 (about $15,715 in 2022 dollars) plus the $17,000 sticker price of a new PT Cruiser, and included the needed chassis-stiffening modifications and a shortened, hydraulically-actuated rear hatch. The materials used look pretty good, even after 20 years of abuse and neglect. This one had the convertible mechanism ziptied shut in many locations when I found it. Naturally, I cut all those zipties to see if the roof mechanism still worked. It was very, very stiff but proved semi-functional (the zipties appeared to be an attempt to keep a faulty latch mechanism from letting the roof pop open at speed). The roof assembly weighs a lot, though you could spend an extra $3,000 to get a power-actuation system from NCE. This cab must have been extremely noisy and buffety with the top down at speed, but so what? Convertibles are cool. Mechanically, it's an ordinary Touring Edition with a Neon's four-cylinder making 150 horsepower. You could get a PT Cruiser with a five-speed manual transmission, and many did, but this one has the extra-cost automatic. Starting in the 2003 model year, a 215-horse turbocharged engine became available. Rare, but not valuable. This commercial is for the factory convertible, but you get the idea. It drives reasonably well too, the gearbox slotting though its ratios with a sporting feel, the lever topped by a knob that looks and feels like a pool ball so favoured by hot-rodders. The stiff
Chrysler showed the PT Cruiser at the New York Auto Show in 1999 alongside a 1924 Chrysler Six, while observing the company’s 75th anniversary. The PT Cruiser, Chrysler’s on-again, off-again retro wagon, is on again. At least for now. The beleaguered carmaker had placed the PT Cruiser in its delete queue this year while the company was dealing with ownership and bankruptcy issues. But Chrysler has now formally announced that the quirky PT Cruiser is back in the line at the company’s assembly plant in Toluca, Mexico. In a brief news release, Peter Fong, president and chief executive of the Chrysler brand, said he was “excited to announce we’re re-energizing the iconic and award-winning PT Cruiser.” The PT Cruiser was introduced in 2000 and has since been a consistent seller, with more than million units sold internationally, Chrysler said. There had been speculation, with Fiat now allied with and managing Chrysler, that the Toluca plant might be reconfigured to turn out Fiat 500s, the challenger to the Mini Cooper that has proven so popular in Europe. Fiat has said the 500 is likely to arrive in Chrysler dealerships in the United States by the end of 2010. According to the plan to convert the Toluca plant may have been scrapped, because both carmakers are short of the cash needed to retool the plant.
